For most students, lunch is one of the only times during the school day when they can actually take a break. Students spend hours going from class to class, doing assignments, taking tests, and listening to teachers. So, when lunch comes around, students should be able to relax and have some freedom. Students should be allowed to use their phones during lunch as long as they are responsible about it.
One reason students should be allowed to use their phones is because lunch is supposed to be a break. Students might want to listen to music, check social media, text their friends, or just take a few minutes to themselves. After focusing on school for several hours, having that small break can make it easier to get through the rest of the day.
Phones can also be useful for staying in contact with family. Some students have parents who might need to reach them during the school day. Lunch is a good time to check messages or respond without interrupting class. Not every student uses their phone just to avoid talking with people.
It’s understood why schools might not want students on their phones all day. Phones can be distracting, especially during class. But to be completely banned during lunch? Schools could have simple rules, such as allowing phones during lunch but requiring students to put them away when class starts.
At the end of the day, students should be trusted to make responsible choices. Part of high school and growing up is learning how to manage our time and technology. Lunch is a break, and students should be able to decide how they want to spend those few minutes. Allowing phones during lunch would give students a little more freedom without affecting their education.
