Why are students not informed personally of shooting threats?

On October 12, a screenshot of a snap was sent across social media between students across the district of a shooting threat for October 19, 2023 that was written in a bathroom stall.

Writing on stall said “Don”t come to school oct 19. Imma shoot this ***** up ong. AHS this is a set out warning”

While it clearly did not happen on that day, it was still scary that the school had a threat and nothing was addressed to the students. Students clearly were aware of this threat and didn’t take things seriously.

“LMAOAOAOAOO that’s wild” posted by a student on Snapchat.

“If I get shot imma say thank you” said by a student on Discord.

“We done for” by another student on their Instagram story.

Students across the school, and schools near all knew of this threat, and I came to wonder why this wasn’t addressed. Even if it wasn’t taken seriously by the students and seemed to be a ploy to get out of the PSAT, district didn’t take any extra action, more than just sending out a mass email to the parents.

“So basically, I follow district guidelines,” said principal Rachel Cortez. “So whenever we have a threat, or anything like that, I notify the district. Typically what the district wants us to do is to contact the parents, because you never know how the students are going to react.”
