Dancer Zoe Martinez has cherished dance since childhood, navigating through various highs and lows in her dancing career. In the 8th grade, she made the decision to reignite her passion for dance. With the guidance of her coach, she successfully secured a spot on the junior varsity team at Austin High School, demonstrating improvement each day.
“This will be my third year dancing,” Zoe expressed. “I’m technically still a beginner.”
Zoe’s exposure to dance began at the age of three when her mother enrolled her in baby ballet. After a period, she chose to quit to pursue art.
“I participated for a while until I quit to pursue art at a Houston-based art school on a scholarship.”
She later elaborates that she eventually quit art as well.
As she matured, Zoe developed a fondness for watching TV shows and movies centered around dance, reigniting her inspiration.
“I had always loved watching TV shows and movies that focused on dance,” Zoe explained. “I quickly found that it was something I wanted to pursue for real.”
Her mentor, Mrs. Williamson, played a pivotal role in inspiring Zoe to engage in team-level dancing. In the 8th grade, Zoe officially decided to rejoin the dance. Mrs. Williamson encouraged her to try out for the Varsity team. Zoe explained that she initially rejected the idea. Mrs. Williamson quickly proposed an alternative.
“I quickly shut her down and said that varsity seemed too rigorous for me,” Zoe explained. “She then introduced me to the JV team, and I was reluctant to try out for it, but I’m glad I did.”
When asked about one of her favorite dancing memories, Zoe responded emotionally.
“Definitely when we performed at our school’s homecoming football game in September,” Zoe said. “The energy in the stadium was completely unreal. All the girls on the team were dancing on pure adrenaline and excitement. That was also the first time we were performing in front of an audience so that was a lot of fun.”
This dancer has encountered challenges in her dance journey but has consistently rediscovered her passion. From a young child enamored with dance to a freshman in high school on the dance team, Zoe continues to diligently work on improving her dancing every single day, making the little kid within her proud.
