On Oct. 8, sophomore Logan Morton qualified for cross-country regionals with both the boys
and girls varsity teams placing fourth at Districts. Although a young team with most runners being
freshmen and sophomores, the team managed to successfully close out the season.
With the guidance of cross-country coach, Todd Laney, being relatively new to the sport did not
stop Morton from making his way through districts and reaching regionals.
“I’m actually pretty new to the sport as I started cross country in grade 8,” Morton said. “To
make regionals is an achievement that I am very proud of.”
As a sophomore, Morton hopes to continue training throughout his high school years to
potentially make it to state.
“I think being able to experience qualifying for regionals as a sophomore will make me more
prepared to advance to state in my coming years,” Morton said. “At regionals, I hope to run a
competitive race and get a new PR!”
Besides his own determination and grit towards the sport, Morton credits his achievements to
coach Laney’s constant motivation.
“Coach Laney has a big heart for the sport,” Morton said. “I think he has motivated me to
become the best version of myself.”
Reaching regionals was a goal previously set for the team and Morton worked throughout the
year with dedication towards achieving it.
“We set a goal last year and Logan kept on improving. Throughout the summer and all season he
worked really hard to be here,” coach Laney said. “This was our goal and he achieved it. He’s only a
tenth grader so we’re really excited for him.”
As the team hopes to grow and improve together, the expectations for the future of the cross-
country program remain high.
“I think we were blessed to see many new faces this year,” Morton said. “I think we have the
potential of becoming very competitive the next few years.”
