Water polo team wins district title

On Sept. 25, the girls’ water polo team brought home the district championship. The team had been working on their game since February through off season programs, lifting weights, working on their skills twice a week all off season, and spending early mornings training to dominate the competition.

With the tournament’s final game against Dulles High School, the girls’ team won with a score of 23-5. This championship marked the third district championship that the Austin Water Polo program has won.

“This feels great,” water polo coach Sean Brogan said. “This is the third championship our program has won so it’s just another trophy for the collection that these athletes have earned.”

However, securing a third successful district championship was not the only feat this team accomplished as this championship also witnessed historic play from the members of this team.

“Kim Kulow really dominated district play,” coach Brogan said. “She amassed her 200th career goal in the final district game while also scoring 34 goals and 16 assists. Emma Martin was right behind her with 33 goals in district play.”

Throughout the tournament, the players saw coach Brogan as their main encourager and credit him for their win.

“Coach Brogan in the main reason why we are here today,” left flat Avery Bibb said. “He helps us become better players. He pushes us to our greatest abilities and coaches us to victory!”

The team also collected memorable moments during this tournament as they balanced having fun with teammates with training to dominate the competition.

“We all have one really memorable moment from the final district game,” Bibb said. “At the end of the game we got to push Coach Brogan into the pool, and we all jumped in together!”

This win has strengthened the team’s intentions to improve their game further as they aim to bring home more championships through the developing skills of the underclassmen.

“The team’s goals moving forward are to make a big playoff run this year,” coach Brogan said. “Over half the starters are underclassmen, so the future is extremely bright for our girls’ program. District championships and deep playoff runs will be the norm and expectation.”
