In wake of Donald Trump’s triumph in this year’s Presidential elections, many Americans mourned the potential loss of their human rights. The 47th President of the United States of America has his name glorified with 34 felony counts and is once again the face of a leading nation.
Despite one of the most discussed topics this week, it is noteworthy that this article failed to attain any comments that could be quoted from students. When asked if they had an opinion on Trump’s win in the elections, a string of words calling the outcome “unfair” and “dooming” were let out, however when requested to be quoted on these claims, multiple students refused.
What does this say about people’s belief in their right to be vocal about their opinions? They aren’t to be blamed for their silence. Driven by the fear of being attacked by “Trumpers” or simply outcasted for standing against someone who’s against their human rights and advocates for possession of guns, naturally allows silence to be the comfort zone for these people.
Take for example the school newspaper’s Instagram account. An Instagram reel with the specific disclaimer of “all hypothetical” and the request of not attacking anyone expressing their opinion about the outcome of the election did not fail to get comments criticizing the opinions of those who chose to express their support for someone besides Trump in the video.
It is also notable that out of the five people that chose to comment on the reel, two decided to express their support for Trump while belittling those that do not agree, while the other three were either neutral or non-opinionated. However, none of Kamala Harris’ supporters were found in the attack zone. What does this say about the supporters of Harris? It is evident that either Harris’ supporters are too frightened to express themselves for reasons proved accurate by the commenters or they simply do not want to engage in activities that could escalate controversy.
While vocal about the outcome of this election on social media stories and posts, there is a notable pattern in the loud silence of “anti-Trumpers” in real world setting, as proved so by the refusal to be officially quoted in a statement against Republicans.
Is this foreshadowing the upcoming 4 years where anyone who speaks against the leader’s wrongful actions is an outcast and the prey to attacks justified by a simple conflict of opinion?
It is time to revisit the ideals of freedom of speech and opinion. Hold and protect the laws that safeguard you and your loved ones close and tight these coming years. America has made its decision, however questionable it might be. Know your rights and speak loud and proud to defend them.
