Finding Balance: Two Students, Two Perspectives on Ideal Weekend Length

By: Izza A and Basheer A

In the ongoing conversation about the ideal length of school weekends, students have different opinions on how the duration impacts their overall well-being and academic performance. Two distinct perspectives emerge from Hania Sandho and Abeerah Aziz, offering a glimpse into manyways extended weekends affect students.

Sandho asserts that the additional days off provides much-needed rest. According to her, the regular two-day weekend barely allows students to recover from the fatigue of the school week. She suggests that schools should consider a three-day weekend as it offers more time for relaxation and self-care activities.

“Long weekends are very refreshing, giving me more time to rest and feel energetic,” she says. During these extended weekends, Hania engages in activities such as yoga, watching her favorite TV shows, and going on walks as she believes this is a routine that contributes to her overall well-being.

On the other hand, Aziz presents a different viewpoint, emphasizing the challenges that come with an extendedweekend. She argues that returning to the academic routine after a long weekend is a daunting task, as it leaves her feeling unmotivated.

“It’s hard to get back on track, and the struggle to regain focus is real,” she states. Abeerah further highlights that the rhythm of a shorter break aligns with her productivity and study habits. She believes the consistent two-day weekend helps her maintain a sense of discipline, making it easier to transition back into school tasks and believes that this structure not only aids in managing time effectively but also builds a sense of accountability among students.

In the student community everyone has their own take on the ideal length of weekends. Abeerah and Hania’s different opinions show that each student has unique needs. The ongoing discussion over weekends between students reminds us that there’s no one right answer for everyone. Instead, it encourages us to respect and consider what works for each student individually as some may find it refreshing to have extended weekend, while others may thrive in the consistency and structure of a shorter break. The opinions and insights shared by Hania and Abeerah underscore the importance of acknowledging these differences and it becomes clear that the ideal weekend length is subjective and personal. Hania and Abeerah’s views and voices helped us understand better and appreciate the diverse ways students experience their academic journeys.
