With this years basketball season coming to a close last week for the girls basketball team, they return home with new achievements and high spirits despite the devastating loss against Seven Lakes at the playoffs. The Lady Dawgs displayed nothing short of drive, determination, and hard work and are very proud for setting a fierce record for the best season of girls’ basketball in Austin high school history.

Since February 12, the girls’ basketball team has scored win after win in the 2024 UIL Texas Girls State Basketball Championship. Austin has competed against some of their biggest rivals including Memorial, Katy Taylor, and other huge opponents. With a saddening loss of 81-74 against Seven Lakes, the Lady Dawgs unfortunately returned home without a trophy but instead with pride, momentum, and new found motivation towards next year’s basketball season. They hope to return tougher than ever.

“Everyday in practice, I think we came to make each other better. The coaches, they wanted to make us better,” Shunteria Anumele, a player of the team, said. “They came with the same attitude everyday, we came with the same good energy everyday, and that’s what led us in the good year we had.”

This season was the best yet and according to Coach Quatera Limbrick, she agrees that this year they’ve all worked hard as a team.

“I feel like leading to playoffs we worked on the little things,” Limbrick said. “We even capitalized big things that we thought we were going to face in playoffs.”

In order to be the best during the big game, Limbrick commented about their journey to improvement.

“We improved a lot not only with the players everybody knows, but even with the people on the bench.” Limbrick said.

As the basketball team looks towards next season, they agree that some changes need to be made in order to be at their fullest potential and beat Seven Lakes once and for all.

“We just have to be very communicative,” Anumele said. “This year we were very low on communication and that’s what led us to the loss that we had.”

With players and coaches eager to face Seven Lakes for another year, they steadily prepare for the incoming season and team next winter.

“For next season we’re looking to start what we finished off,” Limbrick said.
